St. Charles Parish EOC Gets New Home

St. Charles Parish EOC Gets New Home

St. Charles Parish cuts the ribbon today on a brand new emergency operations center.

The facility is on River Road across from the parish courthouse in Hahnville.

"It's a 13,000 square foot facility. It's rated for 200-mile-per-hour winds which is especially good for hurricane response," says parish spokeswoman Renee Simpson.

"The former EOC was actually in the basement of the courthouse, so there was really no room to expand, which led to the decision to go ahead and build a new building," Simpson said.

Simpson points out the new EOC gives the parish capabilities it didn't have before, such as "sleeping space for about 40 emergency responders, a commercial kitchen, two 600-kilowatt diesel generators."

The $5.8 million facility was paid for with a combination of local tax dollars, state and federal grants and a $870,000 donation from Dow Chemical.

Simpson says EOC is in the process of moving from the courthouse basement to its new building. The move is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
