Gretna officials rallied Friday to show support for keeping the downtown post office branch open.
The U.S. Postal Service is considering closing the branch in the old train depot on Third Street. The rally will be held outside the depot.
Gretna Mayor Belinda Constant tells 99.5FM "the purpose of the rally is basically to give the opportunity to the constituents to lobby against the closure of that post office."
"This is a way just for them to voice their opposition, and they'll be doing that through the signing of a petition which will be forwarded to the postal service authority," Constant said.
Gretna and Jefferson Parish officials argue the downtown post office should remain open because it's critical to the daily operations of nearby government offices and the courts.
"And the amount of mail that goes through that post office strictly from the government community is incredibly large," Constant said.
