The President/CEO of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau says the mugging, shooting and injuring of an off-duty police officer from Ireland Tuesday morning in New Orleans was unfortunate on multiple levels.
"Most importantly for him, and his dad who was here with him and his family," Stephen Perry told reporters Wednesday.
"He certainly got into a situation that apparently was very difficult. I don't know any of the details of that. But at a time when we're about to double and triple our international marketing, that's important," Perry said.
Perry says the incident and other incidents of violent crime in the city have generated calls to the Bureau from people wanting to know about safety in the city.
"Every time, in fact year round, I and every one of my peers have to handle questions, and they're the ones we least like, questions about public safety, is it safe to come there. The answer to that is, it is safe to come here. The odds of anything happening are extremely small," Perry said.
