N.O. Mayoral Candidate Promises To Fire Police Chief If Elected

While Mayor Mitch Landrieu applauds the leadership of Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas, Michael Bagneris says he would fire Serpas if he's elected mayor.

"Absolutely. It's gonna be the very first thing I do, if elected mayor. The whole culture of the police department starts with the top," Bagneris said on the Denny Schaffer Show Friday.

Bagneris, who's challenging Landrieu in the Feb. 1 elections, has been endorsed by the Police Association of New Orleans (PANO). Bagneris says PANO has given several reasons for endorsing him.

"Among them was the morale problem, which obviously comes from the failed policies that the chief, in conjunction with this administration, is forcing upon the police department," Bagneris said.

Bagneris says he considers PANO's endorsement of his candidacy "a very, very strong one".
