N.O. AFL-CIO To Hold Its Annual Labor Day Picnic

Today is Labor Day, the culmination of a three-day weekend and a national holiday in honor of American workers.

The U.S. Department of Labor says the first Monday in September is set aside to remember the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well being of our country.

Labor Day will be celebrated across the country with picnics and barbecues, as well as events sponsored by labor groups.

In New Orleans, the Greater New Orleans AFL-CIO will hold its annual Labor Day picnic at Marconi Meadows in City Park. The event starts at 11am and ends at 3pm.

Officials say there will be plenty of food, refreshments, games, live music and of course shade, under the majestic oak trees.

Admission is $7, children 5 and under can attend free of charge.

Candidates for public office frequently stop by the picnic to shake hands and to be seen in hopes of gaining votes. Don't be surprised if the mayor or other elected officials show up for a photo opporunity.
