New Orleans Police Department Revises Tattoo Policy

Those who serve in the New Orleans Police Department may no longer have to wear long sleeves if they have tattoos on their arms.

NOPD and the Fraternal Order of Police announced Thursday changes to the personal appearance policy that says a "single nominal tattoo on the arm that is visible below the elbow" will not have to be covered up.

The FOP says the change will "make policing in a hot climate a little more bearable."

Supt. Ronal Serpas said in a statement, "I would like to publically recognize and thank the FOP leadership for their valued collaboration on this project and I look forward to working with this organization in the future."

The FOP said it was "encouraged" by the change and hopes it will be "a sign of increased communication and cooperation between the NOPD administration and the officers who serve the city of New Orleans."
