Officials from across the New Orleans metro area say people must have hurricane plans and be ready to leave if an evacuation is called.
Parish presidents and officials from agencies including the Army Corps of Engineers and levee boards say New Orleans and surrounding parishes are better protected than ever before.
Federal forecasters are expecting a slower-than-usual Atlantic hurricane season, with eight to 13 tropical storms and three to six hurricanes. That's because the weather phenomenon called El Nino is expected to suppress the storms' number and intensity.
But the officials say all it takes is one slow-moving tropical storm heading to your city to make it a bad season for you.
