Louisiana's legislative auditor says two related Jefferson Parish not-for-profit organizations appear to have misspent or misappropriated almost half of $1.51 million in grants.
One of the nonprofits was identified as Thompson Thibodeaux Community Development Corp. The audit says it doled out money to politically connected contractors, including former councilman Byron Lee's brother-in-law.
The other nonprofit was the Reverend Mansfield Thompson Educational Foundation, Inc., which operates a private school in Marrero.
The report says current Jefferson council member Mark Spears, a former assistant parish attorney, did private legal work for Thompson Thibodeaux.
Lee did not provide the auditor a response to the findings.
Spears issued a statement calling the findings misleading. His attorney said he did nothing wrong.
