La. Consumers To Pay More For Health Insurance In 2015

Louisiana consumers can expect to pay more for health insurance next year under the new federal health care law.

State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon tells 99.5 WRNO a preliminary review by his department of health insurance rates filed by 15 insurers shows an average increase of 10% in 2015.

"On the 15 company filings we have so far, five are above 10% and 10 are below, and the average will be around 10%," Donelon said.

Donelon says the rate increases are being justified in part by the first ever premium tax being charged by the federal government for health insurance premiums.

The commissioner says the insurance department is just beginning its review of the rate filings. They should have a clearer picture in the next few weeks of how much rates are going to go up.
