JP Council Shoots Down Proposal To Disqualify HCA From Seeking Hospital Lease

The Jefferson Parish Council today narrowly rejected a proposal to throw out the Hospital Corporation of America's bid to lease the parish's two public hospitals because it pleaded guilty 14 years ago to Medicare fraud charges.

The Council voted 4 to 3 to kill the resolution by Councilman Ricky Templet.

HCA is one of three companies vying for the lease to run East Jefferson General Hospital and West Jefferson Medical Center. The other two are Louisiana Children's Medical Center (LCMC) and Ochsner.

The Council also voted 4 to 3 to approve the selection of the firm Nemzoff & Co. to review the lease proposals.
