Jefferson Parish is about to embark on a shoreline protection and restoration project in Lake Pontchartrain in the vicinity of the Bucktown Marina.
It involves the installation of 17 floating islands, each 5 feet by 20 feet, anchored to the floor of the lake.
"What we hope to happen is to create new marshland or marsh environment in between the islands and the adjacent shoreline," says Katherine Costanza, assistant director of the parish's Department of Environmental Affairs.
Costanza says each island is made of recycled plastic with native plants on top and will provide an opportunity for grass to grow in between each island and the existing shoreline.
Costanza says they hope to begin the installation in the next 90 days. The project is being paid for with a federal grant.
