The future of Avondale shipyard could depend on a study announced Friday by owner Huntington Ingalls Industries.
HII says it will partner with Kinder Morgan Energy Partners to "explore and evaluate best-use opportunities for the facility." If the study finds an economically viable option, the two may then enter a joint venture to re-develop the facility.
Sen. Mary Landrieu says the potential partnership could create a thousand jobs. Sen. David Vitter feels redeveloping Avondale would boost the economy.
Kinder Morgan Energy Partners is, according to their company information, a leading pipeline transportation and energy storage company.
HII says Avondale's location on the Mississippi River "offers unparalleled access to major markets by truck, rail and sea, making it attractive for many uses." The company announced its intention to close the shipyard in July 2010.
