Fewer Accidents Reported On Improved Huey P. Long Bridge

Authorities say the newly improved Huey P. Long Bridge is proving to be safer for motorists.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway general manager Carleton Dufrechou tells The Times-Picayune that the number of accidents on the span dropped from 183 in 2012 to 114 in 2013.

The widened bridge opened to motorists in June 2013 after a $1.2 billion modernization.

The bridge, which crosses Mississippi River to connect the east and west banks of Jefferson Parish, is managed by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Commission.
