The recent heroin overdose death of actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman is putting the spotlight on Jefferson Parish's heroin problem.
Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich says there's been a significant increase in the number of heroin-related overdose deaths in the parish in recent years.
"Last year, our total number of overdoses in 2013 was 126, and 66 of them were from heroin overdoses," Cvitanovich said.
He says the surge in heroin use in the parish may be due partly to a new prescription tracking system that makes it more difficult to obtain prescription pills.
People are turning to heroin because they can get it more easily than prescriptions.
