We're halfway through the King Cake season, a time when king cake sales typically drop off a bit. But at Haydel's Bakery, the demand for the king cakes hasn't let up.
"The season is shorter this year, so I think everybody knows that and were looking for king cakes right away as soon as King's Day hit," says David Haydel, co-owner of Haydel's Bakery.
Haydel says both their shipping and walk in business have been good, and he expects sales of king cakes to increase as we get closer to Fat Tuesday.
Haydel says right now they're shipping on average close to 1,000 king cakes a day. He expects that number to go up to about 2,000 a day next week and 5,000 by Lundi Gras.
"Our walk-in business increases the closer we get to Mardi Gras, especially when the parades start. Everybody wants to have a king cake out on the parade route," Haydel said.
